Musky Shop Northwoods Fishing Report: Early August 2026

As we push into the first full week of August, the Northwoods fishing scene is settling into a very productive mid-summer groove. After a stretch of warm, sticky weather, a few timely cold fronts and cool nights have brought water temperatures down to a much more fishable level. Most lakes are currently hovering comfortably in the mid-70s. These stable, typical summer conditions have kept the bite consistent across multiple species.

Here is what you need to know if you are hitting the water in Oneida and Vilas counties this week.

Water Conditions & Weather Outlook

  • Water Temperatures: Currently sitting in the mid-70s on most bodies of water, which is a great drop from the near 80-degree peaks we saw recently.
  • Weather Forecast: Expect classic summer weather with daytime highs ranging from the mid-70s to the low-80s.
  • Solunar Advantage: Keep a close eye on the upcoming New Moon on Wednesday, August 12th. This lunar phase shift should provide a significant bump in feeding activity.

Musky: Structure, Sand Grass, and the Mud

Musky patterns are heavily dictated by the type of lake you are fishing, but the recent slight cool-down is starting to fire fish up.

  • Deep, Clear Lakes: Fish that spent June and July roaming open water are finally starting to slide up and relate tighter to structure. However, a major key right now is deep sand grass. Many fish are holding in 20+ feet of water directly over these sand grass beds.
  • Shallower Lakes: The previous summer heat pushed a lot of fish out of the shallow weeds and into the deeper mud flats. The mud is full of life right now, including bug hatches, which draw in the baitfish and, subsequently, the apex predators.
  • Lures & Tactics: When fishing the mud or deep sand grass, presentation depth is everything. Pumping tube baits (like Red October Tubes) or tube-like plastics (like the Livingston Kraken) near the bottom and just above the sand grass has been highly effective. As fish move closer to structure, a mix of rubber baits, jerkbaits, and blades are starting to produce well. Topwater bucktail action is also heating up, but remember to adapt your retrieve depth if you are fishing clear, deep water.
  • Pro-Tip: When graphing the mud flats, slow your boat down. Cruising at 14 mph instead of blowing by at higher speeds will allow your electronics to actually mark the life and bait suspended over the mud.

Walleye and Smallmouth Bass: Deep Summer Haunts

The walleye and smallmouth bass bite remains very solid, especially for anglers willing to fish deep.

  • Locations: Focus your efforts on deep, clear lakes. The most productive depths are ranging between 20 and 28 feet. Key structures include unstructured humps, steep drop-offs, deep weed edges (specifically around 22 feet), and deep cribs.
  • Lures & Tactics: Live bait is reigning supreme for both species right now. Crawlers and leeches are the primary producers when fished on the bottom or over structure. Live minnows are also working exceptionally well, but you will need to keep an aerator running constantly in your bait bucket to keep them lively in the August heat.

Panfish: Crappie and Perch Patterns

Multi-species trips are yielding great numbers, provided you weed through the smaller catches to get to the keepers.

  • Crappie: The crappie bite is very reliable in the 10-foot depth range. The most aggressive fish are being found closely adjacent to green, standing weeds. Small, light jigs (like a 1/16 oz) tipped with a minnow are doing the trick.
  • Jumbo Perch: While perch were roaming the mud flats earlier in the summer during peak bug hatches, they are now transitioning to weed edges. Look for them in about 17 feet of water, specifically relating to low-growing bottom weeds near breaks and drop-offs.

Whether you are pumping tubes over deep sand grass for muskies or soaking leeches for walleyes, the early August bite is healthy and active. Stay safe, respect the resource, and good luck on the water this weekend!
